Having large gaps between one’s teeth can leave the gums vulnerable to injury and may lead to speech difficulties, but small spaces are typically harmless. While many people think that a tiny gap in one’s smile can be endearing or appealing, some individuals would like to move their teeth closer together as a matter of preference. Here’s a brief guide to how veneers can be used to address minor dental misalignments such as gaps between teeth.
What Causes Gaps Between Teeth?
Gaps between teeth can occur for several reasons, a few of them being:
- The teeth being relatively small
- Dental misalignments
- Oral injuries or infections
- Teeth grinding
What Are Veneers?
Veneers are amazing cosmetic dental devices that are designed to mimic the ideal appearance of natural tooth structure, and they are typically placed on the front teeth to conceal defects like chips, cracks, gaps, wear, and stains. However, they can also be used to reshape teeth in some cases like gaps or stubbiness, and they are sometimes even used to address minor misalignments by resculpting the teeth so they come together properly. To treat gaps, they are usually used to widen the teeth and close the space.
How Are Veneers Placed?
After you are approved for veneers during your consultation, you’ll probably be scheduled for two appointments. During the first, your dentist will apply a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable before removing a small amount of enamel from the treated teeth. They will then take bite impressions and place temporary veneers so you can adjust to wearing them. The molds of your teeth will be sent to a trusted dental lab where a skilled technician will craft your final appliances.
You’ll come back to the office about two weeks later for your second appointment. Then, your dentist will remove your temporary veneers and cement your permanent restorations in place. After any final adjustments, you’ll be ready to show the world your newly transformed smile.
Veneers can be a great way to address mild dental gaps. Consulting with your dentist can help you find out if this cosmetic treatment can be right for you.
